Shivaji fort

Shivaji, founder of Maratha empire in western India in 1664, was well known for his forts; he was in possession of around 370 at the time of his death.

Midway up the hill is the many-centuries-old Shantadurga Temple that is known for its serenity. From the top of the fort there is a stunning aerial view of the entire village including the Kali River and the bridge running over it. The view of the sun setting in the Arabian Sea is a panoramic sight and an exceptional experience. The 17th century Dargah in the forts attracts many Muslim pilgrims.
At approximately 2 kms north of the fort is the village called Shiveshvar that has the fortress called Kot Shiveshvar (mentioned in the Mangalore Treaty between Tipu Sultan and the East India Company, as well as in earlier historical accounts). This was built exclusively for guarding the northern borders of Canara (Kanada). It was built by the Bijapur Sultanate and subsequently its fortunes were connected to the Sadashivgad Fort. This fort is a complete ruin though you can see the remnants of the eastern gate, a Muslim graveyard, a well and a tunnel. Shivaji fort
