The Mobile Tomb of Machilipatnam

At the St. Mary’s Church in Machilipatnam, visitors can see the tomb’s cover panel near the Preacher’s pulpit. The Mobile Tomb of Machilipatnam was kept for public viewing for a long time but an unfortunate incident when a viewer died of shock on viewing the embalmed body resulted in the lever being sealed. Thus ended the opportunity for visitors to see the body of the woman who charmed the humble soldier centuries ago.
portugueseToday, apart from this tomb, efforts are on to protect the Dutch, the British and the French cemeteries in and around the port city. The cemeteries are spread over five acres and date back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
Another European tomb built by the East India Company near St. John burial ground in Machilipatnam dates back to the 17th century AD and has been recognized as a protected monument. Other ancient structures at Machilipatnam include the Collector’s Bungalow and the Collector’s office and record room. There is also a cyclone tidal wave monument near the Bandar Fort which was constructed by the District Collector, G Thorn Hill in memory of thirty thousand people who perished in a tidal wave that struck Machilipatnam on November 1, 1864.
