Madikeri Fort was first founded by Mudduraja in the second half of the 17th century. He also built a palace inside the fort. It was eventually rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan who named the site as Jaffarabad.

The palace within the fort has been constructed incorporating the European style of architecture and local legend says that it has secret underground routes. At the entrance of the palace stand beautifully sculpted horses holding up the balcony. Currently, parts of the MadikeriFort and Palace have been converted into a prison, a small museum, a public library and assorted government offices.
